What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a natural, holistic medical system that acknowledges each person as a unique individual. Developed in India more that 5,000 years ago making it the oldest medical system in the world where Western Medicine is derived from. Ayurveda translates to the Science of Life and the main focus is to promote health, prevent disease by balancing the mind, body and spirit.

Ayurvedic philosophy believes we are the microcosm of the universe therefore we have all the elements residing inside of us. These 5 elements air, ether, earth, fire and water are considered biological energies referred to as Doshas. There are 3 doshas in Ayurveda: Vata(air and ether), Pitta(Fire and water) and Kapha(earth and water). We’re all born with a unique combination of each, which is our constitution also known as Prakruti , our natural state. Within the 3 doshas are guidelines to live a most optimal and healthy lifestyle. DIS-EASE arises when an individual and their doshas go out of balance. This is called Vikruti, the state of imbalance and current state. Physical, emotional, environmental, social and mental stressors can throw us out of balance, when left untreated can lead to serious illness and diseases. Ayurveda teaches us to bring back balance through diet, herbs, spices and the use of powerful body therapies . It also emphasizes the importance of connection to nature through dinacharya a sanskrit word for daily routine which is designed to maintain and connect us to our Circadian rhythms . Because we’re all a unique composition of these natural elements Ayurveda treats everyone as an individual which makes it unique since it’s not a one-size fits all approach. We treat the whole person and not just the dis-ease.
